Method
How we did it
We used the DataForSEO Business Listings database to pull the Google Maps listings for Canada's hospitals and emergency departments on October 5, 2026, searching Google's hospital categories and then hospital names filed under other categories.
We kept hospitals and health centres with an emergency department. Dedicated children's hospitals, specialist institutes, urgent care centres and hospitals without an emergency department were left out. Where a hospital's emergency department has its own Google listing, those reviews were added to the hospital's. That left 177 hospitals and health centres with at least 200 Google reviews each, 135,074 reviews in all.
Each hospital was ranked by its exact average rating, worked out from its count of one, two, three, four and five-star reviews rather than the rounded score Google displays. Where two hospitals have exactly the same average, the one with the larger share of one-star reviews ranks lower. The reviews cover each hospital as a whole, not only its emergency department.
Province averages pool every review left at the province's ranked hospitals and are shown for the four provinces with at least 10 hospitals in the ranking. The best and worst rated hospital in each of the 10 provinces is listed below.
