America's lowest-rated hospitals on Google named in a ranking of 2.9 million reviews
A Maryland hospital just outside Washington, D.C., has the lowest Google rating of any hospital in America with at least 500 reviews, while a small hospital on the Hawaiian island of Kauai has the highest, according to a new analysis of Google reviews.

Key findings
University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo ranks last with 2.00 stars from 1,360 reviews, and 71% of reviewers gave it a single star. Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn is second-lowest with 2.02.
Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York, averages 2.05, and Cone Health Alamance Regional in Burlington, North Carolina, and Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital outside Detroit both average 2.06. Cone Health and the University of Maryland Medical System each have two hospitals in the bottom 10, with Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro (2.08) and UM Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata (2.12) also on the list.
The complaints are recent, too. All 10 average under three stars across their latest 100 reviews, and about a third of the recent one- and two-star reviews with a comment mention waiting.
Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea has the highest rating in the country, 4.89 stars from 720 reviews, and fewer than one in 100 reviewers gave it a single star.
Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, is second with 4.86, ahead of Baptist Health Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida (4.82). Aspen Valley Health in Colorado is fourth with 4.81, and Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas in Beaumont and Burke Health in Waynesboro, Georgia, both average 4.80.
Medicare's own patient survey points the same way. Nationally, 72% of patients rate their hospital 9 or 10 out of 10. At nine of the 10 lowest-rated hospitals on Google the figure is lower, falling to 44% at Brookdale, and none of the 10 has more than three of Medicare's five patient-survey stars. Eight of the 10 highest-rated match or beat the national figure.
By state, New York has six of the 40 lowest-rated hospitals, more than any other. Among states with at least 20 ranked hospitals, New York also has the lowest median rating, 2.97 stars, followed by Michigan (3.08) and Maryland (3.10), while Alabama has the highest, 4.47. Florida has seven of the 40 highest-rated hospitals, and the median across all 1,506 is 3.93.

Method
How we did it
We matched every acute care and critical access hospital in Medicare's hospital directory to its main Google listing, the profile Google shows when someone searches for the hospital by name, and collected each listing's Google reviews on October 5, 2026, through DataForSEO's Google Maps data.
Duplicate listings for the whole hospital were combined, and listings for single departments such as an emergency room were left out. Specialist hospitals such as orthopedic, surgical, heart and women's hospitals were left out, along with children's, military and VA hospitals. That left 1,506 hospitals with at least 500 Google reviews and a Medicare patient-survey star rating, 2,926,510 reviews in all.
Each hospital was ranked by its exact average rating, worked out from its full one-to-five star breakdown rather than the rounded score Google displays.
State comparisons use the median hospital rating and cover states with at least 20 ranked hospitals. The patient-survey figures come from Medicare's hospital patient survey (HCAHPS), August 2026 release. The recent-review figures come from the latest 100 Google reviews of each of the 10 lowest-rated hospitals.
