How we did it
We used the DataForSEO Business Listings database to pull the Google Maps listings for Nando's restaurants in South Africa on 5 October 2026, 321 candidate listings in all, and refreshed each listing's star counts directly from Google Maps the same day.
Listings marked as permanently or temporarily closed and listings that weren't Nando's restaurants were left out. That left the 225 open restaurants with at least 300 Google reviews each, 294,866 reviews in all.
Each restaurant was ranked by its exact average rating, worked out from its count of one, two, three, four and five-star reviews rather than the rounded score Google displays, so restaurants that show the same rating on Google are still put in order. Where two restaurants have exactly the same average, the one with the larger share of one-star reviews ranks lower. A restaurant whose score rested on one burst of reviews in a short period was left out.
Each province's average gives every one of its restaurants equal weight (the mean of the restaurant averages) and is shown for the seven provinces with at least 10 restaurants in the ranking. The Free State (seven restaurants) and the Northern Cape (three) have fewer, so they are left out of the province ranking, but their best and worst rated restaurants are listed below.
