Method
How we did it
We used the DataForSEO Business Listings database to pull the Google Maps listings for bank branches across the US on October 7, 2026. Only listings Google categorizes as a bank were used, and ATMs, credit unions, head offices, loan and mortgage offices and the offices of card issuers and online-only banks were left out.
We kept the 3,071 branches that were open and had at least 100 Google reviews, 509,525 reviews in all. Each branch was ranked by its exact average rating, worked out from its count of one, two, three, four and five-star reviews rather than the rounded score Google displays, so branches that show the same rating on Google are still put in order. Where two branches have exactly the same average, the one with the larger share of one-star reviews ranks lower, and among the 16 branches with a perfect score, the one with more reviews ranks higher. Every branch in the 10 worst and 10 best lists was checked against its live Google listing the same day.
The bank averages cover every branch with at least 50 Google reviews and include the 13 banks with 100 or more such branches, giving each branch equal weight. Each state's average gives every one of its ranked branches equal weight (the mean of the branch averages) and is shown for the 37 states with at least 10 branches in the ranking.
The ranking reflects what customers say on Google about their visits to bank branches, not the banks' products, rates or financial strength.
